Chapter Fourteen

Grayson

On the cusp of hearing some of the worst news of his life, Grayson was amazed with how at peace he felt.

Hearing about his mother’s terminal illness and letting that reality sink in made him think about his past and his future. Helen told him to go for what was important. Upon those words, he knew immediately where he needed to be—with Lara.

The degree to which he was moved by her threw him. He thought he was a seasoned Casanova when it came to women, but she proved he was a lightweight. What he felt for her scared him so much that he tucked tail and ran. It was somewhat unforgivable to leave like he had. That was the kind of thing he did to women he didn’t care about, which was everyone—everyone but her.

Leaving without a word was an act of desperation, not indifference. He simply had to get someplace where he could think. Now that he had his head on straight and she was probably at work, he thought he’d go in person to tell her how important last night had been to him.

He checked in with Helen, who slept off and on throughout the day. Once daylight hit, she always moved from her bed to the chair with the help of her nurse. This morning she’d looked even more frail than yesterday.

Fear hit him like a punch to the gut. It was apparent that now she’d divulged her big scary secret, she would let go and rapidly decline. She opened her eyes, probably sensing that he was standing in the living room staring at her.

“Hi there,” she said with a smile in her voice. “Where are you off to?”

It was a question she asked him all the time when he was a teenager. Some things never changed, even if they were about to change forever.

“Just checking on you.” He would put off Lara after all. His mother sounded so frail, looked so faint, he found himself desperate to spend every moment with her.

“Grayson Gamble.” The firm tone was there even though her head was turned, and her eyes were lightly closed as if she was about to drift off to sleep. “Go wherever it is you were going. I’m not going anywhere today.”

A tear drizzled down his cheek. Thankfully she couldn’t see it.

“In that case, I thought I’d take Lara to lunch.”

She smiled. “What a fine idea.”

“I won’t be long.”

“Take her to the club,” she said. “You can sign.”

“I’ll think about it, Mom.” How ironic that when he was a teen his mother wouldn’t let him invite her, and now she was asking him to. “That’s generous.”

Before he could say anything else, Helen was asleep. Her snoring was a reassurance.

Grayson grabbed his new coat, feeling glum. He wished the wakening of his feelings for Lara was not cloaked with such a harsh reality.

He felt ridiculous in the Mercedes. He had a 1966 Volvo back home. The Mercedes was rented to make him feel like a big shot in the small town.
